Derek Micholson
Program Lead – Manitoba Knowledge & Research Transfer Program (KRTP)
Derek’s beekeeping experience began in 2009 when he started working as a summer student in Dr. Rob Currie’s research lab at the University of Manitoba. After completing his BSc, he continued on as a full-time research technician in Dr. Currie’s lab for 7 years before Rob finally convinced him to pursue a Masters degree which he has recently completed. Outside of the research lab, Derek has worked as a honey bee and leafcutting bee inspector and held the inspection contracts with the Province of Manitoba in 2019 and 2020. In his spare time, Derek is also a hobby beekeeper, running a small honey business for the last 6 or 7 years. Recently Derek was appointed as the Program Lead of Manitoba’s first tech transfer program, known in Manitoba as the Knowledge & Research Transfer Program, or KRTP, which began in January 2021.
